Side Project

My side project is to be able to maintain my home network

That includes

- setting up all computers to print form the shared printer

- Backing up data

- fixing problems with machines as they arise

- backing up data

- Setting up firewalls/security/antivirus and spyware

Seeing as everyone but me in my family is a tachnological e-diot, so I must solve all their problems. And not hurt them too much in the process...

So Far, I have fixed my network many times when it has gone down, simply by restting the router

Also, I have opened my NAT (Network Address Translation) my going to my router, typing in my password, and poking around in the settings until I came on to it.

NAT allows multipul computer to efficently share one IP address. All outgoing traffic looks like it is coming from one machine.

This can greatly speed up your network, but does make it more vulnerible

Lastly, I have set up port fowarding for the game Team Fortress 2, as it was wroking to slowly.

Port Fowarding allows the ports being fowarded to be used more quickly, allowing a faster game.

My borther recieved a new Vista laptop for Christmas. I have been helping him set it up, and fooling aroud with vista.

His computer is set up on the network, but doesn't yet print to the shared printer.

My Dad wanted to be able to use his laptop upstairs, so he bough a range extender.

Set up was easy.

All I did was to plug it into a wall socket, and basically it was done.
